The Landmark Hotel in Carrick-on-Shannon, owned by brothers Ciaran and John Kelly is a stunning hotel. It is perfect for a stay over, or just for a bite while passing through. It is situated on the banks of the Shannon, with beautiful views from the Boardwalk Café, and their conservatory style Café, Aromas.

Carrick on Shannon is one of those towns that always seem to have a buzz about it. Each time we have been there, and in fairness it has been off season, the town is really busy and bustling and the Landmark Hotel is very much the focal point, most of the visitors seem to be staying there.

The food in the Landmark is unpretentious and the emphasis is on casual dining. We normally head for the Boardwalk Café, which is the main restaurant and bar. It has a very contemporary design with huge images of boardwalks on some of the walls, while the furniture is in a variety of colours, from purples to lime greens to creams, while the floor is a mixture of polished wood, marble and mosaic.

The menu is fairly diverse, offering an array of soups, salads, main courses and desserts. Monday to Friday they run a special lunch menu which changes daily, and is priced very competitively, with soups at €5.50, salads at €7.50 and mains around the ten euro mark.

On our last visit we enjoyed the Cold Platter with a combination of Chorizo, Smoked Turkey and Prosciutto Ham. It is served on a wooden board and comes with dressed rocket, tomato and home made potato salad. A tasty and healthy option. Deirdre had spinach and ricotta tortellini with homemade tomato sauce and parmesan shavings. Other options include smoked haddock with poached egg and creamy potato, lambs liver, onions and red wine sauce or lamb shank with root vegetables. There is normally a choice of homemade pies as well, and the desserts are scrummy.

There is also Aroma’s conservatory café, serving savoury snacks, delicious cakes and a dizzying array of teas and coffees. On a sunny day this is a lovely setting.

The Landmark is great value, very nicely decorated, serves good food at realistic prices, and for a mid-week break or a weekend away this part of the country is beautiful. Carrick-On-Shannon is located in one of the most beautiful areas of the North West of Ireland. Surrounded by stunning lakes, this relatively undiscovered part of Ireland is easy to get to by car, bus, rail or air.

**The Landmark Hotel is a luxury 4 Star Failte Ireland and AA rated hotel located in the heart of Carrick-On-Shannon, Co Leitrim, ideally located just 1 hour 40 minutes from Dublin, 2 hours from Galway, and 40 minutes from Sligo.
