Review

Situated in the busy Thomas Street area of Limerick City, Aubars has been serving great food and drink for over 10 years and has consistently gone from strength to strength. It continues to lead the way in its food offering, recently winning Best Gastro-Pub in Limerick at the annual Restaurant Association of Ireland Awards.

The inside is stylishly and tastefully decorated with warm wooden floors and wall panels, french inspired wall pieces and lighting, a traditional style bar and cosy booths/snugs. The menu is varied with the emphasis is on the use of fresh local ingredients at all times. The starters include fresh soups, and a selection of salads, with other interesting items including peppered calamari, goats cheese croistini and thai chicken skewers. For those who like all things from the sea, Aubars serve one of the best seafood chowders around, simply exquisite.

The main courses on offer compliment the range of starters very well. Everything taste is catered for, again with all ingredients coming from local homegrown suppliers. Starting with a mouth watering homemade burger, with salad, relish and homemade chips, other choices include oven roast chicken breast, with roast root veg and red wine jus, pan fried salmon with creamy mash, market greens and hollandaise sauce, fresh carbonara pasta, or the vegetarians there is a wild mushroom risotto which will certainly hit the spot. A fantastic range of specials change according to availability and seasonality, and can include steak, fish and more unusual dishes such as a wonderful chicken breast stuffed with black pudding and wild boar.

Aubars has deservedly become an institution with Limerick people since it opened and enjoys a busy trade for both lunch and dinner. It is always reassuring that the place you have chosen to eat is full, and they seem to have gotten things right in Limerick with this very buzzy and lively spot. If you are living in Limerick and haven’t tried it, there’s no better time, with some very good set lunch and dinner offers, while if you are planning on visiting the city soon, you should make this a stopping point.
