Review

Bar One Gastro pub is on Rush Street in Castlebar, and according to the RAI it is the best Gastro Pub in Mayo. Mark & Alan Cadden are no strangers to catering; this is something that runs in the family.  Their parents Mary & Michael ran The Asgard Bar and restaurant for many years in Westport and brother Paul owns Dublin’s well known Saba Restaurant.

Bar One is a modern bar with dark wooden floors and muted coffee and cream walls, as well as a more traditional bar. There is banquette seating and plenty of tables and chairs, as well as some nice high stools perfect for perching on with a drink of a night. The staff is very welcoming and inviting on arrival and is knowledgeable of everything on the menus including all the daily specials.

The West in general has become a Mecca for good seafood restaurants and you won’t be surprised to see that seafood plays a big part here, and a couple of  their dishes that Bar One have already built a reputation for are their fish pies and battered cod with homemade chips with mushy peas.

We enjoyed tiger prawns in a filo pastry served with mango dip and Mc Geogh’s Connemara smoked air dried lamb served with rocket, fresh shavings of Hegarty’s farmhouse cheese drizzled with olive oil to start.  Other dishes to choose from were spicy chicken wings; garlic bread; garlic mushrooms or Cajun chicken Caesar salad.

There was a large selection of gourmet burgers; pizzas; steaks or pasta to follow.  We opted for the spicy chicken and bacon wrap (Bar One’s Best Kept Secret) and I went with Mul’s (Bar One’s Indian Chef Mul) chicken curry with basmati rice.  Neither of us were disappointed, we’re big fans of McGeogh’s air dried meats, and Mul’s curry was authentic and nicely spiced.  What was also very nice was you had the choice of drinks from the bar, or wine off a well selected wine list.  There were wines from all across the world, available by the glass, by the carafe and by the bottle, so something to fit into all tastes and budgets. We ended up with a glass of Pinot for me, while himself had a beer with the curry.

The evening was excellent quality food, served and presented well and all exceptional value for money. Bar One is very child friendly so whether you are out with friends or with the family you can be assured everyone will be well catered for. One of Castlebar’s, and indeed Mayo’s, best spots. Well worth a visit.
