Noi Tre Italian restaurant in on the Pearse Street end of Erne Street, that’s about half way between Westland Row and the Grand Canal Theatre. Owned and run by Nicola Orefice, they use only authentic Italian products, all imported directly, and have built a menu designed to deliver on flavour and value. The name means ‘The three of us’, and refers to Nico and his two partners in food.

Nico is an old friend, he worked with Paolo Fresilli in Via Veneto in Enniscorthy Paolo Tullio’s favourite Italian restaurant) for some years, before running his own place in Carlow, and he has finally made his way to Dublin. He has always been at the forefront of authentic Italian food in Ireland, so a trip to Noi Tre was eagerly anticipated.

Noi Tre is in a period building, which I imagine was once one of the larger residences in the area. The front door is in the centre, with two rooms, one to each side on the ground floor. Upstairs the layout is the same, with windows in unexpected places and a period fireplace on one wall. The décor is simple and pretty, pained walls in pastel green and feature wallpaper on one wall

 It’s all very charming and intimate. We arrived as three, an unconscious salute to the name perhaps, and were shown to an upstairs table beside a window.

The menu is short and to the point. There is an early Bird served until 7.30, which offers a choice of five starters and mains, all of which appear on the a la carte, so it’s just a shorter version really. We picked from the A la Carte, which is slightly longer Starters include fresh squid salad, mussels Marinara, a tower of shrimp with vegetables and potatoes and Bruschetta mista, a selection of bruschetta with mixed meats and vegetables. Main courses are divided into meats, poultry and pasta, and there are some classics here such as the grilled lamb chops with rosemary roasties, a chicken Saltimbocca, filet steak with spinach and Marsala wine, or a Tagliata do filetto Lombardi – chopped fillet with rocket, cherry tomato and parmesan shavings. Pasta’s includeTagliolini al frutti di mare, gnocchi with speck and saffron in a cream sauce, home-made vegetarian lasagne and a pomodoro; tomato, basil and parmesan.

We started with a shared platter of small bruschetta, with cherry tomatoes and Parma ham, followed by a starter of the daily special, ravioli filled with crabmeat and ricotta, and a Caprese salad which the ladies shared. Mains were a portion of the lamb chops, which were cooked crispy, with balsamic drizzled sautéed rosmary potatoes and salad, a delightful fish medley of pan roasted cod with mussels and a tomato sauce, while Abigail had the ravioli as her main, with added prawns and mussels on top. All the dishes were excellent, and we just managed to share a chocolate mousse, made with 70% cocoa, and finish with three good coffees.

Noi Tre is an unpretentious Italian trattoria that serves authentic food at very good value for money prices. At time of writing their wine licence hasn’t been finalised, so it’s a bring your own affair at present, with no corkage. Try it out, you won’t be disappointed, and Nico is a very good tenor, so try to coax a song or two while you’re at it. Italian food and opera, sure where would you get it? Recommended.
