Review

Café 1 is located on the Kilkenny Road in the centre of Castlecomer for the past seven years and has built a strong reputation in the town for great food in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Sarah Jane Condon has such a passion for baking that she has put her heart and soul into the business and this is very apparent in the warmth of the welcome and the attention to detail.

A year ago she moved into the premises next door and expanded from a café seating 15 people where she worked alone, to a 45 seat restaurant where she now employs 7 local ladies to work alongside her.

Interior designer and sister, Genieve Condon has done a beautiful job of transforming a shell of a building into a beautifully designed room, blending the old and the new wonderfully. With a glass façade inviting passers-by in, you enter to a large room full of bookshelves which are home to carefully hand picked ornaments, an antique dresser beside an open fireplace, large retro mirrors on the walls and a choice of tables and chairs down one side of the café and two window seats to sit and watch the world pass by the door.

Sarah Jane arrives at 5am daily in order to be open for breakfast at 8.30 and serves food all day till 5pm Monday to Saturday. All foods are prepared and cooked on the premises with a large choice of gluten free foods. She makes all her own sauces, jams and chutney’s and sources everything locally. With an extensive menu as well as daily specials which are displayed on the board there is a great choice and quality food with value for money is important to the team.

Breakfast is served from 8.30am to 12 noon you can choose between a full Irish, vegetarian, scrambled eggs or french toast, all coming in at or a little over €5.

Lunch offers a whole host of signature sandwiches priced between €3.90 and €4.90 as well as a selection of daily specials which change daily. So fancy a chicken en croute? Some spicy chilli con carne, or how about spiced chick pea parcels with sweet potato wedges? The dishes are interesting and delicious, always a good combination. They update their Facebook page with the specials each day, and you can see what's on today on the Facebook feed to the right.

For me the icing on the cake has to be the large array of desserts and cakes on display. Baking is Sarah Jane’s real love and whether it is a freshly baked scone with homemade jam and cream or the biggest slice of double chocolate fudge cake imaginable, you will thoroughly these confections served with a great coffee from the espresso bar or a speciality tea.

A friendly smile is always on the menu and they know most of their customers on a first name basis. The ambience is welcoming and you will definitely want to return. A lovely spot to stop off and enjoy.
