Value Menus & Wines - Wines for the new 'Value' menus

Wine and Restaurants

You may have noticed in the press of the past few weeks that the Restaurants Association of Ireland, the Hotel Federation, Bord Failte and the Irish Times have come together to create a 'Value Menu' scheme, which will give us, the consumers, a choice of a €10, €20, or €30 set price menu in participating restaurants.

If you've been to continental Europe you'll have seen similar 'tourist menus' displayed outside eating houses. In a way it's a response to some of the harsh realities I've been writing about in the article above. There's a sense that restaurant prices have become too high and there's a growing resistance to the prices. Personally, I don't think that the high prices are entirely caused by greed; hidden costs like insurances and bank charges are rising far in advance of inflation, and these have costs have impacted dramatically on prices.

But it's no surprise that a big part of your bill in a restaurant is the cost of the drink that you imbibe. Some restaurants make you pay a great deal more for it than others, so as part of this 'Value Menu' initiative, Febvre Wines (one of the guide's sponsors) are making their De Martino range available to participating restaurants, so not only will the value menu be available to you, but a value wine will be as well. I suspect that the 'Value Menu' is going to be a winner, so it occurred to me you might like to know what the De Martino choices are and what they taste like. Two varietals are available from De Martino, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Sauvignon Blanc.

The De Martino winery is in the Maipo Valley in Chile, where Pietro De Martino Pascualone first arrived 60 years ago from Italy. Today the company produces a range of wines, from the De Martino Reserva de Familia which earned a 91 from Robert Parker, to the estate bottled varietals.
